History

In 1995 Cafe Pride was founded as a safe place for GLBT youths.  For a year we met at Holy Covenant United Methodist Church, on Diversey near Sheffield, but the space was limited and the church was not close enough to where the youths were.  In 1996 we moved to Lake View Presbyterian Church.

About that same time, we founded Pride Ministries, which supervised Cafe Pride and provided an umbrella organization for speakers on GLBT youth issues and other activities in progress or planned relating to GLBT inclusion in  worshiping communities.   Pride Ministries' board of directors represented several denominations and local congregations who are concerned about GLBT youths.

In time Cafe Pride continued to thrive and grow while most of the other activities of Pride Ministries became incorporated into other agencies and ministries.  We also found it difficult to maintain a board of directors representing several congregations.   Eventually Pride Ministries ceased to exist.

In 2005, Cafe Pride became a part of the ministry of Lake View Presbyterian Church where it had been thriving for the previous nine years.  Although we had received generous funding from other congregations, Lake View had for several years been the only congregation providing volunteer staff and participating as a congregation in this ministry.  We continue to provide a safe place for youths to visit, meet new friends, and deal with the complicated issues of being a young adult and being a sexual minority.
